ADMISSION POLICY PREAMBLE

Bright Future Special School admits learners in accordance with the legislation on the admission Policy of the Department of Education as stipulated in SASA Act 84 of 1996.

SCOPE &
PURPOSE

The policy applies to parents, learners, teachers, members of staff, therapist, officials of the Department of Education and any stakeholder associated with the school. It is formulated to ensure that the rights of children to education are not violated.

CRITERIA OF
ADMISSION

A chronological age of 6 to 13 years at admission

An Autistic child is admitted at 3years of age.

On admission, a learner undergoes assessment by the class educator, therapists, school nurse and the officials of SNES.

Appropriate documentation e.g. Support Needs Assessment (SNA) form, referral report, etc. is a prerequisite when a learner is admitted.

Learners are categorized according to the level of activity participation, this imply that learners with MR will be grouped in SID program (educable) severe disabled learners (Autism, High care) are grouped into SPID program (trainable).

Learners are admitted from these areas-Newlands, Westrich, Kenville, Lindelani, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma and Greater Inanda.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

A learner will report at the school with the parent to begin the process of a learner admission.

 

Submission / filling of SNA 1 forms with the administration staff at the office.

Proceeds to a multi-disciplinary team (Professional Nurse, Psychologist, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Social Worker for assessment of needed support.

Scholastic assessment by SMT members for placement to the relevant classroom.

Admission Committee meets on regular basis to discuss new admissions and placements.

Occasionally meets with the Department Coordinators for Special Schools (SNES) for learner verification based SIAS document, psychological files and reports to ensure appropriate placements

The school works in collaboration with Pinetown District for admission of learners.

Parents to be informed about the recommendations by SNES and the school verification procedures in the admission of their learners.

Exit strategy will endeavor to place learners at FET or training centres.
